Through One Administration. E-book. Formato Mobipocket. Read this book for the history of American politics, and the history of marriage, courtship, and womens' roles and rights. The story takes place in the parlor parties of Washington DC elite throughout one political administration as the title implies. Woven into a "romance" story is a critique of marriage and courtship, and that is mixed in with the wheeling and dealings of early American politics from the woman's perspective, which the author apparently drew on her own experiences to write since she had lived in DC and participated in the parlor politics of the 1870s. If you like Jane Austen novels for the analysis and critique society rules and gender roles relating to courtship and marriage, you're likely to find things to like in this book, though it's view of relationships is darker. The main theme is that successful marriage depending on timing. Meeting the right person at the right time can lead to a successful marriage, but the opposite is also very true and leads to miserable marriages. If you do pick this book up, read it with the time period in mind and be aware that there is a lot of truly horrible Native American stereotyping.
Although best known for Little Lord Fauntleroy and The Secret Garden, Frances Hodgson Burnett was considered one of the leading writers in America on the strength of her adult novels, which made her name in the 1870s and 1880s. Ripe for rediscovery, Bello is proud to bring a select group of these classic novels back into print.
A complex tale of courtship, marriage, women's rights and American politics, Through One Administration is one of Frances Hodgson Burnett's most fascinating novels.
At its centre is Bertha Amory, a society wife in nineteenth century Washington D.C. Married to a lawyer, her safe world is disrupted when a former acquaintance returns to the city. Philip Tredennis first met Bertha years earlier, when they were both young. Returning to find her married to another man, yet obviously not in love with him, Tredennis can only watch and try to do what he can for Bertha and the situation in which she finds herself.
Frances Hodgson Burnett lived in Washington D.C. for many years and brilliantly recreates the world she knew so well, where even the most seemingly superficial of characters may show unexpected depth when observed in the right way.
