Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) nasce da una famiglia poverissima a Odense in Fionia. Nel 1819, a soli quattordici anni, parte per Copenaghen con l’intento di diventare un artista. Dopo vari tentativi, approda con grandi difficoltà alla scrittura. Grazie all’interessamento di Jonas Collin, direttore del Teatro reale di Copenaghen, Andersen riesce a dotarsi di un’istruzione di base e poi a compiere viaggi in tutta Europa. Il successo arriverà solo con il romanzo L’improvvisatore (1835). Nello stesso anno, inizia a pubblicare la serie di fiabe e storie che saranno destinate a donargli fama immortale.
