Nathaniel Hawthorne nacque nel 1804 a Salem, Massachusetts, da una grande famiglia puritana. Tra i maggiori scrittori americani del secolo, divise l’attività letteraria con altre occupazioni: nominato console a Liverpool, visse in Europa dal 1853 al 1860 e trascorse due anni anche in Italia. Morì nel 1864. Tra le opere ricordiamo: Fanshawe (1828), Twice-Told Tales (Racconti raccontati due volte, 1837), The Scarlet Letter (La lettera scarlatta, 1850), The House of the Seven Gables (La casa dei sette abbaini, 1851), The Blithedale Romance (Il romanzo di Blithedale, 1852) e The Marble Faun (Il fauno di marmo, 1860).
