All efforts to trace this great work of art proved fruitless and, despite the involvement of Interpol and the police, the trail went cold for the following two years. Until, one evening, Fr. Nel 1984, il “San Girolamo”, un dipinto autografo di Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, venne rubato dalla stupenda cattedrale di St John. Tutti gli sforzi per rintracciare questo capolavoro si rivelarono vani, nonostante il coinvolgimento dell’Interpol e della polizia locale. Questo per due anni, quando un pomeriggio padre Zerafa, allora direttore dei musei maltesi, fu contattato dai ladri con il seguente messaggio: "Abbiamo il quadro. Vogliamo i soldi. Non contattare la polizia, altrimenti…”Prof. Padre Marius J. Zerafa (O.P, S.Th.L, & Lic. Dr.Se.Soc., B.A. Hons. (Lond.), A.R.Hist.S (Lond.) ) è nato a Malta nel 1929. All’età di 16 anni si unì all’ordine dei Domenicani. Ha studiato ad Oxford, Roma, Londra, Parigi e Firenze.Ha iniziato a collaborare con il dipartimento dei musei maltesi nel 1970 fino a divenirne il Direttore nel 1981. Compiuti i suoi 61 anni ha deciso di ritirarsi, ma continua a tenere conferenze presso università ed altri centri culturali.Attualmente è Professore di Arte Sacra presso la Pontificia Università San Tommaso D’Aquino (Angelicum) di Roma.
