Mary Shelley, nata Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin (Londra, 30 agosto 1797 – Londra, 1 febbraio 1851), è stata una scrittrice, saggista e biografa britannica. Figlia del filosofo William Godwin e di Mary Wollstonecraft, autrice della prima dichiarazione dei diritti delle donne, a 16 anni conosce Percy B. Shelley, già sposato, e a 17 anni fugge con lui in Svizzera. Si sposano e hanno tre figli di cui solo uno sopravvive. Il romanzo più famoso di Mary Shelley è Frankenstein, scritto tra il 1816 e il 1817. Nel 1818 i coniugi Shelley si trasferiscono in Italia. Qui Mary scrive Mathilda (1819-1820). Nel 1822 il marito muore e lei ritorna in Inghilterra con il loro unico figlio.

Shelley's name appears on the second edition, published in France in 1823. The author Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (1797 – 1851) was an English novelist, short story writer, dramatist, essayist, biographer, and travel writer, best known for her Gothic novel Frankenstein.
