Mosses from an Old Manse, and Other Stories. E-book. Formato EPUB Nathaniel Hawthorne   -  Ionlineshopping.Com, 2019  -

Mosses from an Old Manse is a short story collection by Nathaniel Hawthorne, first published in 1846. Many of the tales collected in Mosses from an Old Manse are allegories and, typical of Hawthorne, focus on the negative side of human nature. Hawthorne's friend Herman Melville noted this aspect in his review "Hawthorne and His Mosses": This black conceit pervades him through and through. You may be witched by his sunlight,—transported by the bright gildings in the skies he builds over you; but there is the blackness of darkness beyond; and even his bright gildings but fringe and play upon the edges of thunder-clouds. William Henry Channing noted in his review of the collection, in The Harbinger, its author "had been baptized in the deep waters of Tragedy", and his work was dark with only brief moments of "serene brightness" which was never brighter than "dusky twilight". Contents The birthmark -- Young Goodman Brown -- Rappaccini's daughter -- Mrs. Bullfrog -- The celestial railroad -- The procession of life -- Feathertop: a moralized legend -- Egotism; or, the bosom serpent -- Drowne's wooden image -- Roger Malvin's burial -- The artist of the beautiful.

In this instance, the “beautiful image” is the snow image herself, a delicate sculpture formed and animated by the inspired hands of the two trusting children of the Lyndsey family, but later destroyed by the demands of their father—a kindly, practical man—whose refuses to acknowledge that the little girl he spies playing out of doors is an easily perishable creature, and insists that she come inside and sit by the fire. Twice-Told Tales. E-book. Formato EPUB Nathaniel Hawthorne   -  Ionlineshopping.Com, 2019  -

Twice-Told Tales is a short story collection in two volumes by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The first was published in the spring of 1837, and the second in 1842. The stories had all been previously published in magazines and annuals, hence the name. The title, Twice-Told Tales, was based on a line from William Shakespeare's The Life and Death of King John (Act 3, scene 4): "Life is as tedious as a twice-told tale, / Vexing the dull ear of a drowsy man." The quote referenced may also be Hawthorne's way of acknowledging a belief that many of his stories were ironic retellings of familiar tropes. The book was published by the American Stationers' Company on March 6, 1837; its cover price was one dollar. Hawthorne had help in promoting the book from Elizabeth Peabody. She sent copies of the collection to William Wordsworth as well as to Horace Mann, hoping that Mann could get Hawthorne a job writing stories for schoolchildren. In 1963, United Artists released a horror trilogy film titled Twice-Told Tales, with content very loosely adapted from three Hawthorne stories. The three stories were: "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment," which actually was one of the "Twice-Told Tales"; the Hawthorne novel The House of the Seven Gables; and another short story, "Rappaccini's Daughter." The film is regarded as a classic of sorts in the field of low-budget Hollywood horror, with Vincent Price, Sebastian Cabot, and Beverly Garland delivering good performances.
