Nathaniel Hawthorne nacque nel 1804 a Salem, Massachusetts, da una grande famiglia puritana. Tra i maggiori scrittori americani del secolo, divise l’attività letteraria con altre occupazioni: nominato console a Liverpool, visse in Europa dal 1853 al 1860 e trascorse due anni anche in Italia. Morì nel 1864.
