Integrando l'interpretazione psicologica ad una lettura più propriamente storico-artistica, il volume tenta di tracciare l'evoluzione e le caratteristiche di un genere che non è stato fino ad ora oggetto di attenzione e di studio autonomo. Al centro del testo è infatti un'ampia serie di ritratti e autoritratti realizzati tra la metà del XIX secolo e la contemporaneità e accomunati dalla presenza evidente di una lesione. La possibilità di collegare queste immagini ad una volontà riparativa, i loro precedenti iconografici e l'influenza di contingenze sociali e culturali che, assieme ai fattori psicologici, influenzano il sentire dell'artista spingendolo a mostrarsi come uomo ferito, sono i temi principali che vengono sviluppati. Presente, infine, anche una riflessione sul potere della ferita, inteso sia come capacità che ha il segno di un trauma corporeo di colpire e coinvolgere emotivamente il riguardante sia, più nello specifico, come perturbante valore profetico.
