Secondo la tradizione, il romanzo fu composto a Parigi, in un edificio al numero 8 di rue Caumartin, fra il 4 novembre e il 26 dicembre 1838, durante una volontaria reclusione dell'autore durata 52 giorni. Sembra che lo scrittore, trincerato nel suo studio, diede ordine alla servitù di rispondere "il signore è a caccia" a qualsiasi importuno venisse a cercarlo e a turbare così la sua produttivissima prigionia. Inoltre, sempre secondo la tradizione, non fu direttamente scritto da Stendhal, bensì dettato, parola per parola, ad un abile copista, unico estraneo autorizzato a "ficcare il naso nel rifugio dell'artista".
