Tommaso Campanella nacque a Stilo (Reggio Calabria) il 5 settembre 1568. Il padre, indigente e analfabeta, faceva lo “scarparo”. Campanella ebbe ingegno straordinario e assetato di sapere. Entrato nel 1582 nell’Ordine domenicano, si scontrò coi suoi superiori dei conventi calabresi, fra l’altro per il consenso col naturalismo di Telesio. Nel 1589, lasciata la Calabria, raggiunse Napoli; poi Roma, Firenze, Bologna, Padova e Venezia. Derubato dei suoi manoscritti dall’Inquisizione e accusato di eresia, nel 1594, su ordine del Sant’Uffizio, fu incarcerato a Roma; molte sue opere furono proibite. Gli fu ingiunto di tornare in Calabria. Lì, nel 1598, divenne capo di una congiura contro l’oppressione feudale e spagnola. Si sognava una repubblica comunitaria e teocratica. Scoperta e repressa la congiura, nel 1599 cominciò per Campanella una pluriennale e tormentata detenzione nei castelli di Napoli. Atrocemente torturato, non confessò e, fingendosi pazzo, salvò la vita. Nel 1626, scarcerato dagli Spagnoli e arrestato dal potere ecclesiastico, fu tradotto a Roma per essere giudicato dall’Inquisizione. Difese con vigore le proprie opere. Nonostante l’ostilità di alcuni prelati, instaurò buoni rapporti con il papa Urbano VIII. Abbandonando il filoispanismo (non privo di opportunismo), cominciò a parteggiare per la Francia. Nel 1634, inquieto per nuove accuse degli Spagnoli, si rifugiò in Francia. Fu bene accolto tra i dotti e alla corte del re. Cominciò a pubblicare le sue opere multiformi. Non poche le aveva scritte, e strenuamente riscritte, in carcere. Il 21 maggio del 1639, in Parigi, la morte interruppe l’impresa.

Tell me after what plan this city is built and how it is governed.Capt. The greater part of the city is built upon a high hill, which rises from an extensive plain, but several of its circles extend for some distance beyond the base of the hill, which is of such a size that the diameter of the city is upward of two miles, so that its circumference becomes about seven. On account of the humped shape of the mountain, however, the diameter of the city is really more than if it were built on a plain.It is divided into seven rings or huge circles named from the seven planets, and the way from one to the other of these is by four streets and through four gates, that look toward the four points of the compass. Furthermore, it is so built that if the first circle were stormed, it would of necessity entail a double amount of energy to storm the second; still more to storm the third; and in each succeeding case the strength and energy would have to be doubled; so that he who wishes to capture that city must, as it were, storm it seven times. For my own part, however, I think that not even the first wall could be occupied, so thick are the earthworks and so well fortified is it with breastworks, towers, guns, and ditches..."
