This major study explores the spatial history of the Dutch East Indies as an imperial formation between the early nineteenth century and the end of empire. It consists of six in-depth case-studies on pertinent themes such as rural capitalism, indirect colonial rule, border politics, coolie circulations, un-modern nationalism and the beginning of Indonesian independence. These studies are set within a novel theory, which connects local, intra-imperial, transimperial and global history in the format of specific topochrones. As such this book is a contribution both to Indonesian transcultural history and the field of New Area Studies.ABOUT THE SERIESDevelopments in the field of area studies — goaded by the analytical deconstruction of world regions from their geopolitical sense — have deeply affected the knowledge production from societies and cultures located in the politicized compartmentalization of the globe. Le présent livre contient ma pensée sur la vie sacerdotale, en la situant surtout dans le presbyterium diocésain, lieu où se concrétise celle-là d’une manière générale. En effet, avec l’ordination diaconale, le clerc séculier est incardiné dans une Église particulière qui, généralement, s’appelle diocèse (cf. CIC, can.265). Dans celui-ci (le diocèse), le clerc incardiné y trouve d’autres prêtres, formant ainsi avec eux une famille dont l’Évêque est naturellement le père. Il s’agit d’une famille dont les liens ne sont ni de la chair ni du sang, mais de la grâce de l’Ordre. Cette grâce assume et élève les rapports humains, psychologiques, affectifs, amicaux et spirituels entre les prêtres (Cf. PDV 74). Dans cette famille presbytérale doit régner la communion entre tous les membres: communion entre l’Évêque et les prêtres, exprimée surtout à travers la sollicitude particulière (de la part de l’Evêque) et l’obéissance sacerdotale (de la part des prêtres), ainsi que la communion des prêtres entre eux, exprimée á travers la fraternité presbytérale. Celle-ci devient ainsi un véritable moteur de la fécondité du ministère sacerdotal et, en vertu de la nature même du sacrement de l’Ordre et du presbyteriums diocésain, elle oblige les prêtres, devenant, pour ainsi dire, un lien de caractère véritablement juridique.
