Duelling Days in the Army. E-book. Formato PDF William Douglas - Forgotten Books, 2017 -
"Duelling," said that clever, though rather eccentric philosophical writer, Mandeville, "is the tie of society, and although we are beholden to our frailties for the chief ingredient in it, there has been no virtue, at least" (he adds) "that I am acquainted with, which has proved half so instrumental to the civilizing of mankind; who, in great societies, would soon degenerate into cruel villains and treacherous slaves, were honour to be removed from among them."But what is honour? The other day a captain in the Russian army stole some seventy pounds from a lady's bag, and when the money was found upon him he pulled out a revolver and shot himself, preferring death to the dishonour of being discovered to be a thief.
Horse-Shoeing as It Is and as It Should Be. E-book. Formato PDF William Douglas - Forgotten Books, 2017 -
Passing down Ludgate Hill one day, my atten tion was directed to the pitiful condition of a horse in the shafts of a large waggon. The poor animal was not drawing the load, but was being driven down the descent by the crushing weight behind, and, utterly unable, from the manner in which it was shod, to withstand this pressure, it had gathered its hind legs well under, and its fore legs well in advance of its body, in a helpless struggle to avert the fall, which it too evidently knew was at hand. Never did I witness such a picture of powerless terror as that horse presented, as with eyes starting, body shaking, and limbs stiffened, it was carried downwards against its will, until the fore and hind feet slipping in the same direction, it came down upon its left side with a crash.

The epoch of which this volume professes to treat embraces a period of about three hundred years 164 to ad. And has an intimate bearing on one of the most momentous turning-points in the history of the world. The first half of this period is almost co-incident with the formation of the great confederation of Medi terranean states under the supremacy of Rome — a confederation which constituted the most important external preparation for the success of Christianity; the second half is co-incident with the birth develop ment and primitive organization of the Christian faith. These are events which gave a new direction to the history of humanity in the West they are the starting-points of a fresh era in the life of the world unlike some of the records of antiquity, an account of them is not merely a revelation of what has tran spired in the past; at the present moment they are still exercising an immense in?uence on the deepest sentiments of mankind.
