Adam Smith (1723-1790), filosofo ed economista, è considerato il caposcuola della scienza economica classica. Formatosi a Glasgow e poi a Oxford, nel 1752 assunse la cattedra del suo maestro, Francis Hutcheson, a Glasgow e nel 1759 diede alle stampe il suo primo libro, la Teoria dei sentimenti morali. Dopo una rapida carriera, divenne vicerettore dell’università, incarico che abbandonò nel 1764, accettando un ingente vitalizio in cambio di un giro per l’Europa come precettore di un giovane duca. A Tolosa iniziò a scrivere il suo libro più noto, La ricchezza delle nazioni, pubblicato nel 1776. Fu poi a Ginevra, dove incontrò Voltaire, e a Parigi, dove frequentò i salotti del tempo e conobbe d’Alembert, Helvétius, Turgot e Quesnay. Dal 1778 fino alla morte fu commissario per le dogane della Scozia.
