Le Grand Meaulnes est un roman d'Alain-Fournier publié en 1913 chez Émile-Paul Frères. Il avait été auparavant publié en feuilleton dans la NRF de juillet à octobre 1913. Le narrateur s'appelle François Seurel, mais il ne s'agit en aucun cas du héros du roman. Il se contente de relater l’histoire d’Augustin Meaulnes, son ancien camarade de classe devenu son ami. François Seurel, 15 ans, et Augustin Meaulnes, 17 ans, sont tous deux élèves au cours supérieur de Sainte-Agathe, un petit village du Haut-Berry inspiré d'Épineuil-le-Fleuriel, et, comme lui, situé par l'auteur dans le Cher, près de Vierzon. Lors d’une escapade, Augustin Meaulnes arrive par hasard dans un domaine mystérieux où se déroule une fête étrange, poétique et pleine d'enfants. Alain-Fournier, pseudonyme d'Henri-Alban Fournier, né le 3 octobre 1886 à La Chapelle-d'Angillon dans le Cher et tué au combat le 22 septembre 1914 (à 27 ans) à Saint-Remy-la-Calonne, est un écrivain français, dont l’œuvre la plus célèbre est Le Grand Meaulnes (1913).

Alain Leroy Locke (September 13, 1885 – June 9, 1954) was an American writer, philosopher, educator, and patron of the arts. Distinguished in 1907 as the first African-American Rhodes Scholar, Locke became known as the philosophical architect —the acknowledged "Dean"— of the Harlem Renaissance. He is frequently included in listings of influential African Americans. On March 19, 1968, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. proclaimed: "We're going to let our children know that the only philosophers that lived were not Plato and Aristotle, but W. E. B. Du Bois and Alain Locke came through the universe."
