The Story of Damon and Pythias. E-book. Formato PDF Albert Payson Terhune - Forgotten Books, 2017 -
The pages of history and the traditions of the "long ago" furnished no scene that should count for more in man's relation with his fellows, as day by day he lives his life, than the one laid in Sicily and furnished by Damon and Pythias. Its elaboration in the play of that name by John Banim found a welcome in the public heart, and later the friendship of these two was made the basis for a society, established in the City of Washington, February 19, 1864.This society has developed into one of the great Fraternities, with membership rapidly nearing eight hundred thousand splendid men, known as the "Order of Knights of Pythias." That Sicilian scene is so human, so filled with lessons that mean for mutual, community and universal good, that the devotees of that great Order gladly encouraged every effort to disseminate the lessons to be found therein. It teaches and will develop the spirit of fraternalism - a spirit that should have a place in the heart and life of every well-meaning individual.
Syria From the Saddle. E-book. Formato PDF Albert Payson Terhune - Forgotten Books, 2017 -
In December, 1893, foreign consuls throughout Asia Minor were directed officially to enforce a decree order ing the expulsion from the Sultan's domains, within ten days, of all who, once Turkish subjects, had become naturalized citizens of other countries. English and American residents in Jerusalem, Beirut, Damascus, and other Syrian towns, at once took alarm and predicted serious trouble in Armenia. It was said; once and again, in my careless hearing, that the imperial man date could mean but one thing it was aimed directly at Armenian Christians. The Turkish government hoped to avoid complications with Christian nations by ridding the land of those who, in the event of a move ment against the doomed race, would be, nominally at least, under the protection of foreign ?ags. The order was not a despotic caprice, but the pro logue to the bloodiest tragedy that has been enacted within five centuries. Calling to mind what has hap pened since the ominous decree, it seems incredible that neither England nor the United States protested against, or so much as instituted formal inquiry into the meaning of, an act that was clearly either arbitrary in cruelty, or else a useless display of authority. It is of course too late to speculate as to what would have been the result of such prompt and humane action. Yet, with the facts in the case before them, the sadly enlightened public will murmur, and the private Chris tian citizen will draw his own conclusions.
Lad: A Dog. E-book. Formato PDF Albert Payson Terhune - Forgotten Books, 2017 -
Three years earlier, when Lad was 'in his first prime (before the mighty chest and shoulders had filled out and the tawny coat had waxed so shaggy), Lady had been brought to The Place. She had been brought in the Master's overcoat pocket, rolled up into a fuzzy gold — gray ball of softness no bigger than a half-grown kitten. The Master had fished the month-old puppy out of the cavern of his pocket and set her down, asprawl and shivering and squealing, on the veranda ?oor. Lad had walked cautiously across the. Veranda, sniffed inquiry at the blinking pigmy who gallantly essayed to growl defiance up at the huge welcomer — and from that first moment he had taken her under his protection. First it had been the natural impulse of the thoroughbred — brute or human — to guard the help less. Then, as the shapeless yellow baby grew into a slenderly graceful collie, his guardianship changed to stark adoration. He was Lady's life slave.
