Una serie extraordinariamente incisiva de retratos de personajes y ambientes de la sociedad sueca de la época completan el impresionante edificio narrativo de la novela: figuras de la vida bohemia, periodistas sin conciencia y sin escrúpulos, señoras ociosas, envidiosas y vanidosas que se dedican a la beneficencia, mujercitas corruptas que fingen el amor, editores incultos e intrigantes, comerciantes usureros y clérigos rapaces.
