"La fin du monde" raconte l’histoire de la rencontre entre la terre et une comète au XXVe siècle, ou plutôt se sert de cette histoire pour proposer un vaste tour d’horizon encyclopédique sur tous les sujets touchant à l’apocalypse.La 1ère partie retrace une conférence scientifique passant en revue toutes les théories décrivant la fin du monde, géologie, climatologie (avec une préfiguration étonnante du réchauffement climatique), astronomie. « La fin du monde » témoigne d’une Foi immense dans la science et dans sa capacité à expliquer tous les fonctionnements de l’univers. Flammarion se livre à un brillantissime exercice de vulgarisation.La 2e partie s’attache a décrire l’évolution du monde dans les 10 prochains millions d’années, et ce, jusqu’au dernier couple terrestre : Eva et Omegar. C’est l’occasion pour l’auteur de faire un superbe travail d’anticipation en imaginant (en 1894), l’énergie solaire et géothermique, le tunnel sous la Manche, l’Union Européenne. Les appareils portent des noms étranges, mais ne nous y trompons pas, lorsque Flammarion parle de téléphonoscopie il faut bien sur comprendre « visio ».

Camille Flammarion (1842-1925) was a French astronomer and psychical researcher, notable for his writings on mediumship and psychic phenomena, including case collections. He also distinguished himself as a novelist and popular science writer.Flammarion popularised psychical research, and psychic phenomena in general, in his overview book "Mysterious Psychic Forces" (1907). Besides his own investigations he described those carried out by Agénor de Gasparin, Marc Thury, the Dialectical Society of London, and William Crookes, lamenting that psychic phenomena ‘have been almost as little studied as in the time of Ptolemy, and have not yet found their Kepler, and their Newton, yet fairly obtrude themselves upon our notice, and cry out to be examined’. He also addressed speculative theories and the topics of fraud and deception. He added that he believed in survival of bodily death, but did not think this was the explanation for all séance phenomena.
