The keynote to a comprehension of all these vehement romances and prefaces and plays is the moral temperament of the author. He was a very close observer of life, and he was born into the world with disadvantages which would have made him a very sour observer, if he had not also been extremely lucky, and if he had not been almost immediately relieved from anxiety by ex ceptional good fortune. But he was not so re lieved too soon to have noticed, with his native clairvoyance, that less lucky people are exposed to a system of social disability which can prove so irksome to them as to destroy the pleasure of life altogether. So, on behalf of these exceptionally luckless persons, the exceptionally lucky Dumas early decided to be a propagandist. He was born to look upon literature as the natural weapon of a modern man, but he scorned to use the pen for personal objects only. His great father, [e pm prodzgue, had been all for self; Alexandre the second, in his odd way, would be all for others. He became, as we put it, conscious of a mission.

A word about the impressions themselves They were written down at the time, in journals and letters, more or less roughly, with no idea of publication. In these days, such a visitor would be writing for a newspaper, or consciously preparing for a book. In 1872 we were not so sophisticated, and if I took copious notes it was with no thought that they would ever be published. If it had been otherwise, doubtless I should have secured many useful particulars now lost, but I hope that a cer tain freshness is retained by the fact that I thought only of my own instruction and pleasure. The elderly man who puts these pages together has not attempted to tone down the enthusiasm of the boy who wrote them; yet, if a sagacious reader is inclined to laugh at so much zeal about poetry and such sustained illusion, why, the author will not be grieved, but, somewhat sadly, will smile too.

The chief, and almost the only, public source of information about the facts of Patmore's life is the Memoirs and Correspondence, in two vol umes, published by Mr. Basil Champneys in 1900. Mr. Champneys, whose work was performed with admirable judgment and sympathy, was supplied with all the necessary documents by Mrs. Patmore, whose devoted foresight during her husband's life, and indefatigable industry then and later, are cordially acknowledged by the biographer. This large work was not a memoir of Coventry Patmore alone, but of his parents, his wives, his deceased children, and many of his relatives. As a collection of documents, extremely full and authentic, it can never be superseded.
