Nacque nel 1869 a Kaunas, in Lituania, da una famiglia ebrea, ed emigrò negli Stati Uniti nel 1885, unendo fin da subito il proprio destino a quello del movimento anarchico americano. Fu attivista, filosofa, scrittrice e oratrice, viaggiò per tutto il paese, riempiendo piazze e teatri. Venne incarcerata per colpa delle sue idee e delle sue attività politiche. Fu tra le promotrici dello sviluppo del pensiero anarchico nel Nord America e nell’Europa del XX secolo. Morì in Canada nel 1940, quando un malore la colse durante una delle sue conferenze.
