Erich Maria Remarque nacque a Osnabru¨ck nel 1898. Nel 1916, in piena Grande Guerra, fu spinto ad arruolarsi volontariamente e nel 1917 fu spedito sul fronte occidentale, dove rimase gravemente ferito. Il suo primo romanzo pacifista, Niente di nuovo sul fronte occidentale, fu pubblicato nel 1929. Nel 1933 i nazisti bruciarono e misero al bando le sue opere. Riparato in Svizzera, vi risiedette fino al 1939, anno in cui si trasferì negli Stati Uniti. Nel 1948 tornò in Svizzera, dove visse e continuò a scrivere fino alla morte, nel 1970. Nel 2013 Neri Pozza ha pubblicato Tre camerati, terzo libro della trilogia della guerra, nel 2014 La via del ritorno, nel 2015 La notte di Lisbona e L'obelisco nero, nel 2016 Niente di nuovo sul fronte occidentale, nel 2017 Tempo di vivere, tempo di morire. Nel 1938 Tre camerati divenne un celebre film diretto da Frank Borzage e sceneggiato con successo da Francis Scott Fitzgerald, con Robert Taylor e Margaret Sullavan nei ruoli principali.
