Nacque nel 1860 in una fattoria nel Wisconsin. Scrittore, poeta e saggista, è noto soprattutto per i suoi racconti dedicati al lavoro nei campi del Midwest. Il suo libro più celebre è Strade maestre, del 1891. Autore molto prolifico, pubblicò, oltre alle opere di narrativa, le due autobiografie A Son of the Middle Border (1917) e A Daughter of the Middle Border, e con quest’ultima vinse il Premio Pulitzer nel 1922. Fu membro della American Academy of Arts and Letters. Morì nella sua casa a Hollywood nel 1940.
