Heinrich Heine (1797-1856), scrittore e poeta tedesco di famiglia ebraica, studia diritto, filosofia e letteratura. Segue le lezioni di Schlegel a Bonn e a Berlino frequenta Hegel, Schleiermacher e Chamisso. Convertitosi alla religione evangelica, si laurea in Giurisprudenza a Gottinga. La critica sempre più radicale alla società tedesca lo porta a trasferirsi in Francia, dove conosce Balzac, Hugo, de Musset e Sand. Tra le sue opere recentemente pubblicate in Italia: Gli dèi in esilio (Adelphi 2000), Il viaggio nello Harz (Marsilio 2001), Poesie scelte (Mimesis 2016).
