Hugh Lofting (1886-1947) è stato uno scrittore inglese, vissuto negli Stati Uniti con la moglie americana. Ha ideato il carismatico personaggio del dottor Dolittle durante la Prima guerra mondiale: un modo divertente e metaforico per raccontare di sé ai figli in quegli anni al Fronte. Le avventure del dottor Dolittle riscossero immediatamente un grande successo di critica e pubblico. Nel 1923 l’opera fu insignita del prestigioso Newbery Medal. Negli anni a seguire i lettori di Dolittle aumentarono a dismisura facendo della serie una saga bestseller da milioni di copie vendute. Lofting scrisse quattordici titoli dedicati al dottore. Le sue avventure sono state adattate per il teatro e per il cinema. Indimenticabile Eddie Murphy nel film intitolato Il Dottor Dolittle (1998), e Robert Downey Jr. nel nuovo colossal della Universal Pictures, intitolato Dolittle (2020).
