Inazo Nitobe (1862-1933), educatore, interprete culturale e diplomatico, studiò economia agricola a Sapporo. Convertitosi al Cristianesimo, nel 1883 riprese gli studi di letteratura inglese e di economia presso l’Università di Tokyo; in seguito si recò negli Stati Uniti e poi Germania. Nel 1897 si trasferì negli Stati Uniti con la moglie americana, dove scrisse la sua opera più famosa, Bushido. Nel 1918 partecipò alla Conferenza di Pace di Versailles e rimase a Ginevra come sottosegretario generale della Lega delle Nazioni. Tornato in Giappone nel 1926, divenne direttore dell’Istituto delle Relazioni Pacifiche.
