Johan Huizinga (1872-1945) è stato uno dei più grandi storici europei del primo Novecento. Nato e vissuto in Olanda, ha insegnato per un lungo periodo all’Università di Leida, pubblicando qui i suoi lavori più importanti – da L’autunno del Medioevo (1919) alla grande monografia su Erasmo (1924), da La civiltà olandese del Seicento (1933) a Homo Ludens (1938) –, tutti tradotti dall’olandese e diffusi nelle principali lingue europee. Durante l’occupazione tedesca dei Paesi Bassi, Huizinga, sostenitore dei valori della libertà contro ogni totalitarismo, venne perseguitato dal regime nazista. Arrestato nel 1942, rimase prigioniero fino alla morte, avvenuta il 1º febbraio 1945.
