John Cowper Powys (1872-1963) è stato uno dei più rappresentativi autori inglesi del primo Novecento. Dopo la laurea a Cambridge è stato docente in università inglesi e americane. Romanziere, saggista e poeta, ha scritto Wolf Solent nel 1929, a cui sono seguiti A Glanstonbury Romance (1932) e Owen Glendower (1940), a costituire una sorta di ideale «Trilogia del Wessex». Fra i suoi saggi ricordiamo The Meaning of Culture, The Pleasures of Literature, The Art of Growing Old e, pubblicato in Italia da Adelphi, La religione di uno scettico. È stato per tre volte candidato al Premio Nobel per la letteratura.

Those appar ently are designed to stuff the minds of young persons with an accumulation of standard learning calculated to alarm and discourage the boldest. The following list is frankly subjective in its choice; being indeed the selec tion of one individual, wandering at large and in freedom through these realms of gold. The compiler holds the View that in expressing his own predilection, he is also supplying the need of kindred minds; minds that read purely for the pleasure of read ing, and have no sinister Wish to transform themselves by that process into what are called cultivated persons.
