Nato nell’isola di Leucade, in Grecia, nel 1850, Patrick Lafcadio Hearn è stato uno scrittore irlandese conosciuto anche come Koizumi Yakumo. Si trasferì a Dublino a sei anni e negli Stati Uniti a diciannove, vivendo in totale povertà. Iniziò la sua carriera da giornalista a Cincinnati; sposò una donna africana, fatto al tempo illegale e per cui perse il posto di lavoro. Dopo un trasferimento in Louisiana, viaggiò come corrispondente in India e poi in Giappone, in cui trovò la sua nuova patria, divenne professore e sposò una donna giapponese discendente da una famiglia di samurai ottenendo la naturalizzazione. Morì a Tokyo nel 1904.
