Leonardo da Vinci (1452 - 1519) è stato un artista e uno scienziato italiano. Allievo del Verrocchio a Firenze, si recò a Milano a servizio di Ludovido il Moro nel 1482. Dal 1499, anno della caduta del suo mecenate, si trasferì in varie città, fra cui Venezia, Mantova e Firenze, poi Roma e infine giunse in Francia, dove morì. Il sottile chiaroscuro e la capacità di cogliere gli affetti umani sono alla base del suo naturalismo pittorico. Vastissimo il repertorio di disegni e appunti su una multitudine di interessi, anche molto distanti dalla pittura.
