Por más que la buena suerte de nuestras investigaciones nos haya hecho tropezar con bastantes autos de Lope no mencionados hasta ahora en ningún catálogo ni bi bliografía, el número total que hemos logrado apenas llega al medio centenar. Mu chos más debió de haber, y es posible que algunos se conserven anónimos ó luzcan en las obras de otros autores; pero también es de temer que el mayor número haya perecido sin dejar rastro, tanto por descuido del mismo Lope, que los improvisaba al correr de la pluma, considerándolos, sin duda, como ejercicios de piedad más que de literatura (por más que en la hora del tránsito postrero se consolase con la me moria de haberlos escrito), cuanto porque, andando los tiempos y mudándose el gusto, el prestigio y popularidad de los Autos de Calderón desterró los de Lope y todos los antiguos del escenario movible de los carros del Corpus, y aun de la me moria de las gentes (i).
