Ludwig Wittgenstein (Vienna 1889-Cambridge 1951) è l’autore del Tractatus logico-philosophicus (1922), unica opera di cui curò la pubblicazione, mentre postume sono: Ricerche filosofiche (1953), Osservazioni filosofiche (1964) e raccolte di appunti dettati a lezione o presi dagli studenti come Quaderno blu e Quaderno marrone. Dal vasto corpus degli appunti manoscritti, solo in parte pubblicato dagli eredi testamentari, sono tratte invece le Osservazioni sui fondamenti della matematica (1956). Presso Bollati Boringhieri è apparso Lezioni sui fondamenti della matematica (1982 e 2002).

We have left out very little that is in the notebooks: the omissions almost always were of sketches of symbolism, which could not be interpreted or were otherwise uninteresting. Wittgenstein's use of symbols in logical formulae is often experimental, nor does he always stick to one rule, e.g. In the use of dots. We did not want, however, to interfere with it systematically. In a few places we have corrected evident slips of the pen or slightly amended a formula so as to make its intended meaning more obvious.
