Margery Allingham nacque a Ealing, Londra, nel 1904 in una famiglia appassionata di letteratura. Autrice di Il premio del traditore (Bollati Boringhieri, 2016), pubblicò il suo primo romanzo, Blackkerchief Dick, nel 1923 all’età di diciannove anni. La sua prima detective story uscì a puntate sul «Daily Express» nel 1927, con il titolo The White Cottage Mystery. Il primo romanzo, The Crime at Black Dudley, è del 1929: compare qui Albert Campion, all’inizio un personaggio secondario, ma che riscosse così tanto successo presso i lettori che la Allingham decise di renderlo il protagonista di altri diciassette romanzi, che continuò a pubblicare per tutti gli anni sessanta.
