Er erlebt auch historische Ereignisse wie die Flucht des portugiesischen Königs João VI. vor Napoleon nach Rio de Janeiro, die Hinrichtung Kaiser Maximilians I. von Mexiko, die Balkankriege als Vorboten des Ersten Weltkriegs und 1968 die Mai-Unruhen in Paris. Eindrückliche Reiseberichte entführen den Leser nach Wien in die Zeit vor dem ersten Weltkrieg und beleuchten die Realität der Drogengewalt in Rio de Janeiro.Ist Zeitblick magischer Realismus? Anstatt sich jedoch in einer Praxis um einzelne Patienten zu kümmern, verbrachte er sein gesamtes Berufsleben in Ländern, die sich im Krieg befanden, leitete dort humanitäre Hilfe und befasste sich inmitten des Chaos mit Gesundheitspolitik.
