nacque in Normandia, a Rouen, l’11 novembre 1864, secondogenito di un italiano, naturalizzato francese. Trasferitosi a Parigi, frequentò l’intellighenzia del tempo, ma gli autori cui egli teneva di più furono Flaubert, di Rouen come lui, e Maupassant, che ritenne suo maestro e dal quale fu sostenuto. Nel 1905, spinto dall’amico editore Pierre Lafitte, pubblicò senza alcuna convinzione il racconto L’arresto di Arsène Lupin. Il successo immediato lo portò a continuare le avventure dello straordinario ladro gentiluomo, divenuto celeberrimo, con una incessante, felicissima produzione che durò fino al 1941, anno della sua morte. La sua casa nella località di Étretat è oggi divenuta il museo Le Clos Arsène Lupin.
