Proudhon outlines the anarchist economic theory of mutualism. Law, General Pierre-Joseph (1809-1865) was a French mutualist political philosopher of the socialist tradition. He was the first individual to call himself an "anarchist" and is considered among the first anarchist thinkers. Proudhon is most famous for his assertion that "Property is theft! ", in What is Property? Or, an Inquiry into the Principle of Right and Government. The publication of "What is Property? " attracted the attention of the French authorities, and also of Karl Marx who started up a correspondence with Proudhon. The two men influenced each other and their friendship ended completely when Marx wrote a response to Proudhon's The System of Economic Contradictions, or The Philosophy of Poverty entitled The Poverty of Philosophy. Their dispute was one of the origins to the split between the anarchists and the Marxists in the International Working Men's Association. In his earliest works, Proudhon analyzed the nature and problems of the capitalist economy. While deeply critical of capitalism, he also objected to those contemporary socialists who idolized association.

Pierre-Joseph (1809-1865) était un philosophe politique mutualiste français de tradition socialiste. Il a été le premier individu à se qualifier d '«anarchiste» et est considéré comme l'un des premiers penseurs anarchistes. Proudhon est surtout connu pour son affirmation selon laquelle "La propriété, c'est du vol !", dans Qu'est-ce que la propriété ? Ou, une enquête sur le principe du droit et du gouvernement. La publication de « Qu'est-ce que la Propriété ? » attire l'attention des autorités françaises, mais aussi celle de Karl Marx qui entame une correspondance avec Proudhon. Les deux hommes se sont influencés et leur amitié a complètement pris fin lorsque Marx a écrit une réponse au Système des contradictions économiques ou La philosophie de la pauvreté de Proudhon intitulée La pauvreté de la philosophie. Leur dispute fut l'une des origines de la scission entre les anarchistes et les marxistes au sein de l'International Working Men's Association. Dans ses premiers travaux, Proudhon a analysé la nature et les problèmes de l'économie capitaliste. Bien que profondément critique du capitalisme, il s'est également opposé à ces socialistes contemporains qui idolâtraient l'association.
