Tis, certainly, a great convenience in this latter manner of writing, that the reader need not be tired with tedious repetitions of what others have faid; and that the author, being at liberty to break off when he pleafes, is not obliged to endeavour to teach what he does not unden i'cand; or to write of any fubjeét, unlefs he can do it well. And if foch effays be, as they ought, but competently ltock'd with experiments, 'tis the reader's own fault if he does not improve by them 5b. When an author acquaints me only with his own thoughts, or conjeflzures, if he mii'takes in his reafoning, I am in fome danger of erring with him; at leal't, Imay lofe all the time and pains Ibefiow upon him: but ifa writer endeavours, by enriching his difcourfe with new and real obferva tions or experiments, to credit his dottrine; let his private opinion be ever fo erroneous, yet his experiments being true, Imay make my own ufe' of them; and even plead them againi't his Opinion: lo that fuch a writer will certainly teach me ufeful truths, and cannot eafily lead me into error. From hence, then, appears the great ufefulnefs of experimental oll'avs in general.

The Sceptical Chymist. E-book. Formato PDF Robert Boyle   -  Forgotten Books, 2017  -

Oxford, and, after some fourteen years' residence there, to London. Boyle spent his life in the experimental study of various branches of natural science, meditating and writing on theological subjects — he learned Greek and Hebrew that he might read the Bible in the original languages — and the active exercise of a large and generous benevolence. He was one of the founders, and afterwards for a time President, of the Royal Society. He died in 1691, and was buried in West minster Abbey. Boyle published many works on scientific subjects, both in English and Latin. A collected edition of his scientific writings appeared in 1744, and another edition in 1772. The subjects which chie?y attracted Boyle's atten tion, every one of which was greatly advanced and enriched by his experimental labours and sound reasoning, were these the pressure of air, the distribution of pressure in water and other liquids, the phenomena of fire and ?ame, colour, self-luminous substances, acids and alkalis, the qualities of volatility and fixedness in bodies, and, more especially, all questions connected with the composition and the qualities of material things, and with the nature of those simpler substances whereof mixt bodies are supposed to be com pounded.
