ROBERT GRAVES nacque a Londra nel 1895, figlio dello scrittore irlandese Alfred Perceval Graves e di madre tedesca. Dopo gli studi compiuti a Oxford, combatté in Francia durante la prima guerra mondiale; esperienza, questa, rievocata nelle prime raccolte di versi. Finita la guerra, insegnò letteratura inglese a Oxford e, per breve tempo, in Egitto. Nel 1927 si trasferì a Maiorca, dove, salvo una breve parentesi, rimase sino alla morte, avvenuta nel 1985. Scrittore molto prolifico, pubblicò una quindicina di raccolte poetiche, numerosi romanzi e una mole notevole di saggi. La sua fama è legata soprattutto a importanti studi sulla mitologia: La dea bianca (1947), I miti greci (1955) e, in collaborazione con Raphael Patai, I miti ebraici (1963); e a una serie di romanzi storici dedicati alla classicità: Io, Claudio (1934), Il divo Claudio (1934), Belisario (1938), Io, Gesù (1946) e La figlia di Omero (1955).

Lbased on the rules which regulate my own work at the moment, for many of which I claim no universal application and have promised no lasting regard. They have been suggested from time to time mostly by particular ems in the writing of my last two volumes of po [hesitating to formulate at present a comprehensiv ter-tight philosophy of poetry, I have dispensed with a continuous argument, and so the sections either stand independently or are in tended to get their force by suggestive neighbourliness rather than by logical catenation. The names of the glass houses in which my name as an authority on poetry lodges at present, are to be found on a back page.
