The topic of the relationship between China and the Catholic Church is fascinating and also a source of many concerns. The cultural diversity inherent in our being “social animals” often leads to worldviews that are almost irreconcilably in contrast. You may ask, why would a musician like me be concerned with China? Because I have lived in China for more than 8 years, I have taught in Macao and Shanghai, and I have had extensive experience in Hong Kong as well. For more than 20 years, I have been interested in the Chinese world, studying its culture, language, music, and painting. Therefore, I believe I have some minimal credentials to say something about the text you are about to read.It is a text by Father Sergio Ticozzi, a missionary of PIME who has lived in Hong Kong for more than 50 years and who has already authored important works aimed at understanding the difficult relationship between the Celestial Empire and the Catholic Church. Father Sergio Ticozzi, a prominent Italian missionary, has produced an important new account of the religious policies of the Chinese Communist government. It is clear from his account that religion has long been a central preoccupation of the Communist government and that it continues to be so today. The government has long engaged not only in suppression of Christian and other religious beliefs but, increasingly, in campaigns to manipulate those beliefs and channel them into serving the political purposes of the state and Party. Striking in his account is how the Chinese Communist Party continues trying to make ideology function as a political religion. This has an old pedigree, going back to the personality cult of Chairman Mao Zedong (Tse-tung). Today’s campaigns appear to be more sophisticated but perhaps equally repressive and futile. Alongside his own personality cult, President and Party General Secretary Xi Jinping’s “eight-point frugality code” ostensibly attempts to control “formalism, bureaucratic behavior, hedonism and extravagance” and to “ensure that workers have clear political beliefs, high professionalism, commitment and discipline.” As others have discovered, these aims can be achieved much more effectively by simply allowing people to choose their own religious beliefs from the marketplace of ideas.

Colligite fragmenta ne pereant, esorta P. Emilio Teruzzi, l’autore di uno dei rapporti storici della presente raccolta sulla storia della Chiesa cattolica in Hong Kong. Facendo ricerche negli archivi del Pontificio Istituto per le Missioni Estere (acronimo PIME) e in quelli della Chiesa cattolica di Hong Kong per raccogliere documentazione storica, mi sono capitati tra le mani diversi rapporti scritti in epoche diverse. Mi è sembrato molto significativo raccoglierli insieme e stamparli dapprima in un fascicolo redatto al computer ed ora, grazie al gentile interessamento del Maestro Aurelio Porfiri, anche in formato e book e libro cartaceo. Il presente volumetto copre uno spazio di circa cento anni, dal 1860 al 1958, e riflette interessi diversi a seconda degli autori. Costoro, in genere, dimostrano una forte preoccupazione storica, intendendo provvedere informazioni dettagliate non solo sulla Chiesa cattolica ma anche di altro genere, incluse notizie geografiche, etnografiche, sociali e turistiche. Tutti provvedono uno squarcio e una propria visione della situazione di Hong Kong e della Chiesa cattolica locale del loro tempo.
