Nacque a Sauk Centre, Minnesota, nel 1885. Fu il primo scrittore a rifiutare un Premio Pulitzer e il primo americano a ricevere il Nobel per la letteratura. La sua analisi della vacuità borghese, dell’ipocrisia perbenista e la polemica sui dogmi dell’arrivismo yankee hanno condizionato e ispirato gran parte della produzione letteraria americana del Novecento. Tra le sue opere ricordiamo La via principale (1920), Babbitt (1922), Il dottor Arrowsmith (1925), Dodsworth (1929) e Sangue reale (1947). Morì a Roma nel 1951.
