A Flatlandia tutto ha due dimensioni: gli abitanti sono figure geometriche piane, l'alto e il basso non esistono, i tetti sono a nord e i pavimenti a sud. Ci si riconosce "tastandosi", o intuendo il numero dei lati dal modo in cui sfumano nel Nebbione. C'è stato una volta il colore, ma è stato bandito per riportare tutto all'ordine e alla regolarità. Impossibile immaginare l'esistenza di altri universi. Fino a quando il narratore, un Quadrato, incontra una Sfera che lo trasporta a Spacelandia, un mondo a tre dimensioni, fatto di solidi, di altezze e di profondità. Che possa dunque esistere anche un mondo a quattro dimensioni? Jeu d'esprit e satira sociale, allegoria pedagogica e racconto di fantascienza, Flatlandia è un classico senza tempo, che unisce in modo sorprendente matematica e letteratura, e ci spinge a guardare oltre le nostre "dimensioni" e i nostri confini, per mettere da parte i preconcetti e viaggiare lontano con l'immaginazione.

Flatland est une allégorie, écrite en 1884, où l'auteur, Edwin Abbott Abbott, donne vie aux dimensions géométriques, le point, la ligne et les figures planes, avant d'en arriver à faire découvrir l'univers des volumes par un carré. Cette allégorie n'est pas sans rappeler la sortie de la caverne, voire le cheminement de Don Quichotte, l'hidalgo de Cervantes.

Edwin Abbott Abbott (20 December 1838 – 12 October 1926) was an English schoolmaster and theologian, best known as the author of the novella Flatland (1884). Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions is an 1884 satirical novella. The book used the fictional two-dimensional world of Flatland to comment on the hierarchy of Victorian culture, but the novella's more enduring contribution is its examination of dimensions. The story describes a two-dimensional world occupied by geometric figures, whereof women are simple line-segments, while men are polygons with various numbers of sides. The narrator is a square named A Square, a member of the caste of gentlemen and professionals, who guides the readers through some of the implications of life in two dimensions. The first half of the story goes through the practicalities of existing in a two-dimensional universe as well as a history leading up to the year 1999 on the eve of the 3rd Millennium.On New Year's Eve, the Square dreams about a visit to a one-dimensional world (Lineland) inhabited by "lustrous points", in which he attempts to convince the realm's monarch of a second dimension; but is unable to do so. In the end, the monarch of Lineland tries to kill A Square rather than tolerate his nonsense any further.Following this vision, he is himself visited by a three-dimensional sphere named A Sphere...
