Chi vuole conoscere l’isola d’Ischia (un nome spesso sentito in varie occasioni) ha un modo senz’altro più diretto e completo: quello di programmarvi un viaggio, una visita, una gita, un periodo di vacanze o altro, sicché la si possa ammirare nei suoi vari aspetti più generali o viverla completamente di giorno in giorno nei diversi ambienti che la caratterizzano: mare, montagna, natura, archeologia, arte. Non di meno c’è anche la possibilità di scorrerla e amarla attraverso la ricca fioritura di scritti e di studi, nonché la produzione artistica che costituiscono il patrimonio della cultura e il monumento della civiltà isolana; opere letterarie e testi accresciuti ultimamente grazie alle scoperte archeologiche, che hanno riproposto all’attenzione generali anche quanto sia stata presente l’Isola d’Ischia negli autori classici greci e latini, che ebbero a denominarla con denominazioni varie: Arime, Inarime, Pitecusa, Aenaria, Iscla… Senza dimenticare riferimenti al grande apparato termale e ai richiami legati alle catastrofi che l’hanno colpita come isola vulcania. L’antologia che si propone vuole dare voce a questi personaggi (ma si tratta di una scelta minima) che nel corso dei secoli hanno conosciuto e studiato le vicende ischitane.

Ischia is the largest island in the Bay of Naples. The Castle, built by Alphonso V of Aragon in the fifteenth century, is distant 16 miles from the Punta di Posillipo, and 20 miles from the Mole of Naples; it is famous in Italian annals for its long association with the noble poetess Vittoria Colonna, Marchioness of Pescara. Mount Epomeo, the Epopos of the Greeks, the Epopeus of the Latin poets, rises near the centre of the island. The ancient fable made Ischia the bed of Typhoeus. Ischia, called Aenaria, Inarime, and Pithecusa by the ancients, was populated in earliest times by a colony composed partly of Erythraeans and partly of Chalcidicans: they fixed their home where now stands the village of Lacco Ameno, one of the most beautifully picturesque of the whole island. Strabo, Pliny, Statius and other authors mention the therapeutic virtues of the hot springs of Ischia. The number of foreigners, travellers and Neapolitan gentlemen attending Ischia is very considerable.
