Die in der Schönfließer Straße 21 in Prenzlauer Berg gelegene Keramikwerkstatt von Wilfriede Maaß war eines der bedeutendsten Zentren der künstlerischen und politischen Opposition in der untergehenden DDR. Ihren legendären Ruf erlangte die Adresse zunächst durch illegale Lesungen in der Wohnküche von Ekkehard und Wilfriede Maaß. Seit Beginn der 1980er Jahre und nicht zuletzt durch die Aktivitäten des Dichters und IM Sascha Anderson wurde zunehmend die Werkstatt der Keramikerin zum Treffpunkt nicht-angepasster Künstler und Autoren. Dabei entstanden nicht nur expressiv bemalte Vasen, Teeschalen, Krüge und keramischen Objekte, sondern auch viele Künstlerbücher, illegale Zeitschriften, Plakate, Gemälde, Plastiken und Fotos.Wilfriede Maaß war das gleichermaßen ruhende wie aktive Zentrum dieser Kunst- und Literatenszene. Ihre Werkstatt war Ideenbörse, 'Postamt', Wärmestube und Ort intensiver Begegnungen. Heute namhafte, damals zum Teil ausgegrenzte Künstler wie Cornelia Schleime, Ralf Kerbach, Helge Leiberg, Christine Schlegel, Angela Hampel, Hans Scheuerecker oder Sabine Herrmann haben hier Keramiken bemalt und so künstlerisch wie finanziell überlebt. Durch selbstgeschaffene Strukturen innerhalb eines geschlossenen Systems führten sie auf ihre Weise den Infarkt der DDR mit herbei.Die Geschichte der Keramikwerkstatt fand in den 1990er Jahren ihre Fortsetzung und experimentelle Ausweitung in der Galerie Wilfriede Maaß.Das Buch begleitet eine unter der Schirmherrschaft von Gerhard Wolf stehende Ausstellung. Neben einer Dokumentation wichtiger Arbeiten von Wilfriede Maaß enthält es Texte von Kennern der Szene wie Christoph Tannert, Ekkehard Maaß, Uwe Warnke, Annett Gröschner und ein Gespräch mit Wilfriede Maaß selbst.
