IT was Mr. Romanes' wish that some of his essays should be collected and republished. The following selection has been made, I trust, with due care, and serves to show the range of his thought and the versatility of his mind. Those who knew him well will doubtless still feel that the man was even greater than his works. His conversation was so suggestive, his personality so genial and loveable, that one cannot but feel how inadequate is the printed page. Except for the correction of a few obvious misprints the Essays are reprinted as they stand in the pages of the magazines and reviews from which they are by courteous permission extracted.

First, let us consider the question on purely a przorz grounds. In accordance with our original hypothesis — upon which all naturalists Of any standing are nowadays agreed the process Of organic and Of mental evolution has been continuous throughout the whole region Of life and Of mind, with the one exception Of the mind Of man. On grounds Of analogy, therefore, we should deem it antecedently improbable that the process Of evolution, elsewhere SO uniform and ubiquitous, should have been interrupted at its terminal phase. And looking to the very large extent Of this analogy, the antecedent presumption which it raises is so considerable, that in my Opinion it could only be counterbalanced by some very cogent and unmistakable facts, Showing a difference between animal and human psychology so distinctive as to render it in the nature Of the case Virtually impossible that the one could ever have graduated into the other. This I posit as the first consideration.

OF the contents of this little volume the section on Mind and Motion which forms, in accordance with a suggestion of the author's, a general intro duction, was delivered at Cambridge as the Rede Lecture in 1 88 5,and was printed in the Contemporary Review for June in that year. The chapter on Tko Worlo7 as an Eject was published, almost as it now stands, in the Contemporary Review for July, 1886. A paper on T Ito Fallacy of Materialism, of which Mr. Romanes incorporated the more important parts in the Essay on Monism, was contributed to the Nineteentlz Century for December, 1882. The rest was left in ms. And was probably written in 1889 or 1890.
