Artificial Intelligence and Society are ever so increasingly connected, both in magnitude and in frequency. The very same holds true for history, particularly for economic and social history, that is now interpreting and studying the past with Machine Learning, in the form of Social Network Analysis, Time Series Analysis, or even yet Cluster Analysis. Applications of these tools in the historiographical field are indeed necessary to assess the full extent of the entanglement between historical-critical method and quantitative analysis (descriptive, inferential and generative). This book wishes to lay grounds in this very direction, by juxtaposing different ways of investigating economic history, also from a methodological perspective: the aforementioned Time Series Analysis, Environmental History, Accounting History, Financial History, particularly of ecclesiastic organizations (which in turn renders it Charity History).

Il tema delle disuguaglianze economiche ha assunto nell'ultimo decennio, soprattutto in relazione alla severa e prolungata crisi globale, un rilievo sempre più ampio e attuale. La ricerca storica italiana riflette da tempo su questi argomenti, in una prospettiva di lungo periodo, evidenziando il ruolo delle diverse istituzioni, confrontando i contesti urbani con quelli periferici, approfondendo il tema dei dualismi regionali nello sviluppo economico moderno, dando respiro alle interpretazioni teoriche con le quali è stata descritta e affrontata la realtà dell'inequità sociale. In particolare, la Storia Economica si conferma ancora oggi come laboratorio di straordinario interesse per lo studio delle disuguaglianze economiche, potendo analizzarne componenti ed evoluzione nonché azioni e politiche di contrasto o di semplice attenuazione delle conseguenze. In tale orizzonte si è innestato il Convegno annuale della Società Italiana degli Storici Economici, tenutosi a Brescia il 21 e 22 ottobre 2016 presso la sede dell'Università Cattolica, di cui questo libro raccoglie in larga parte gli interventi, offrendo un contributo originale e solido a una sfida impegnativa che la società contemporanea si trova ad affrontare, che investe non solo scelte di politica economica ma anche questioni teoriche e temi etici e culturali di ampia portata, decisivi per il futuro della società postmoderna, anche nel senso della stabilità dei sistemi democratici nazionali e sovranazionali.

The European economic and social historiography continues to investigate religious congregations demonstrating great interest in Northern Italy too, an extremely dynamic context since the midnineteenth century. Furthermore, even considering the overall Italian landscape, the importance of the relationship ‘Church-economy’ has long been recognized, especially with reference to local financial history, which is intertwined with the history of social Catholicism, including to full extent the male and female religious institutes. In this perspective, several contributions presented in different important European conferences in the last years are included in this book, demonstrating the interdisciplinary and international relevance of the topic. A major event was the conference «For the needy youth that we care. Teresa Verzeri and the religious congregations in modern Europe» (November 11, 2014) held in Brescia by the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart. In this occasion, with the participation of Giancarlo Rocca and Jan De Maeyer (director of the Kadok in Leuven), the magnificent biography of Teresa Verzeri, founder of The Daughters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, written by Goffredo Zanchi was presented.
