His foreword is an afterthought. It was written when the first proofs of the book had gone back to the printer. And this is how it took its origin: A few days ago I received a copy of a Dutch historical magazine containing a violent attack upon one of my former books. The reviewer, who evidently neither had taken the time to read my book nor had taken the trouble to understand what I was trying to say, accused me among other things of a haughty contempt for my forefathers during their time of decline. Haughty con tempt, indeed! Nay, Brother of the Acrid Pen, was it not the truth which hurt thee so unexpectedly rather than my scornful irony?

History With a Match: Being an Account of the Earliest Navigators and the Discovery of America. E-book. Formato PDF Hendrik Willem Van Loon   -  Forgotten Books, 2017  -

Once upon a time, many, many years ago, there lived a people called the Greeks. They Inhabited a small and very rocky peninsula and a number of Islands. A peninsula Is a piece of land surrounded on all aides but one by water. It has a very long coastline and therefore it offers a beautiful chance for navigation. The Greeks soon learned how to manage small boats. With these they sailed all over the eastern part of the Mediterranean and built cities and villages on the many small and rocky Islands of the Aegean Sea. They were out In the open most of the time and they learned at a very early age how to handle arms and protect themselves against foreign enemies. Time and again the mighty Empire of the Persians tried to conquer this little corner of the world, but all attacks ended In defeat. From all parts of Greece, on land and by means of their quick-sailing vessels, the Greeks would rush to the threatened spot and would stop the Invader, often at the sacrifice of every single man who had gone forth to defend the common Fatherland.

The Story of Mankind. E-book. Formato PDF Hendrik Willem Van Loon   -  Ionlineshopping.Com, 2019  -

The Story of Mankind was written and illustrated by Dutch-American journalist, professor, and author Hendrik Willem van Loon and published in 1921. In 1922, it was the first book to be awarded the Newbery Medal for an outstanding contribution to children's literature. Written for Van Loon's children (Hansje and Willem), The Story of Mankind tells in brief chapters the history of western civilization beginning with primitive man, covering the development of writing, art, and architecture, the rise of major religions, and the formation of the modern nation-state. Van Loon explains in the book how he selected what and what not to include by subjecting all materials to the question: Did the person or event in question perform an act without which the entire history of civilization would have been different? After the book's first edition in 1921, Van Loon published an updated edition in 1926 which included an extra essay entitled "After Seven Years", about the effects of World War I and another update in 1938 with a new "Epilogue." Since Van Loon's death in 1944, The Story of Mankind has been added to extensively by his son, Gerrit van Loon. The most recent version by Robert Sullivan (2014) covers events up to the early 2010s. In 1957 a film was made based on the book, titled The Story of Mankind, starring Ronald Colman and an all-star cast, featuring, among others, the Marx Brothers.
