Henry Wadsworth Longfellow nacque nel 1807 negli Stati Uniti, a Portland nel Maine. La sua famiglia, d’origine inglese, vi era emigrata verso la metà del secolo precedente. Fin da fanciullo amò molto la poesia, studiò con tanta passione che appena diciottenne si laureò in Lettere. A vent’anni fece un viaggio in Europa, fu in questo periodo che iniziò ad ammirare l’Italia. Ne sono testimoni le liriche ispirate ai paesaggi e alle città d’arte del nostro bel paese, e l’ammirazione per Dante e Michelangelo. Autore profondamente morale e religioso, ha un potere suggestivo che affascina la mente e il cuore, ispirando sempre sentimenti di bontà. Le nobili creazioni della sua anima, soavemente mistica e incline alla tristezza, narrate con stile semplice ed elegante, sono il prodotti di studi profondi e tormentati, tanto da poterlo accostare alle creazioni musicali di Chopin. Morì a Cambridge nel Massachussets, nel 1882. Nell’Abbazia di Westminster a Londra gli è stato eretto un busto fra i poeti e scrittori illustri. Evangeline è un poemetto in esametri, in questa versione tradotto in prosa, pubblicato nel 1847. Le fonti sono storiche e risalgono alla prima colonizzazione britannica nell’America del Nord. Nel 1713, l’Acàdia oggi Nuova Scozia, una delle province del Canada, dopo la guerra di successione spagnola fu ceduta dai Francesi alla Gran Bretagna. Pare che i desideri degli abitanti fossero stati poco consultati nel cambio, quindi con molta riluttanza prestarono giuramento di fedeltà al governo Inglese. Qualche tempo dopo, essendo nuovamente scoppiata la guerra tra Francia e Gran Bretagna, gli Acadiani furono accusati di aver aiutato i Francesi. Non è stato accertato se l’accusa fosse vera oppure solo un pretesto per punire gli abitanti, fatto stà che la repressione fu dura. Il Governo Britannico ordinò a tutti gli abitanti di abbandonare immediatamente le proprie case e la propria terra, e di disperdersi nelle altre province. I poveri esiliati dovettero rimanere prigionieri fino all’imbarco dell’ultimo abitante per l’esilio. Il poema narra la sorte toccata ad alcune fra le persone travolte da quella tremenda calamità. La trama del poemetto è lieve, ma i personaggi sono ben delineati con sentimento. Evangeline è una soave creatura d’una bellezza idilliaca, che illumina col proprio dolore la vicenda di tutto un popolo, all’interno di un ambiente naturale primitivo e vergine. Per la purezza del suo stile Longfellow fa pensare ad Heine, sul quale però sia passata l’impronta poetica di Wordsworth.
