Daily Life and Origin of the Tasmanians. E-book. Formato PDF James Bonwick   -  Forgotten Books, 2017  -

Tan departed race once lived and laughed in the world. There was a time when no thought of the Whites disturbed the rude joys of the Island Barbarians. They lived as others had done before them; ate the same food, built the same huts, wore the same ornaments, sang the same songs, trembled at the same fears, fought with the same weapons, and were buried or burnt by the tribe when dead. They knew no past, they wanted no future. But they lived no more independent of society than we live. Their characters were similarly moulded by parental training and the sentiment of their age. Their opinions were governed, as with ourselves, by the circumstances of their birth and the wisdom of their ancestors. As savages, they were content to be obedient to the rule of the elders, and would have been very scandalized at our Girl of the Period claiming the supremacy of her own sex. They were true Conservatives, and not only condemned innovation, but crushed it.

The Treasury of Languages: A Rudimentary Dictionary of Universal Philology. E-book. Formato PDF James Bonwick   -  Forgotten Books, 2017  -

W'estern and Southern Europe. This makes Asia and Europe the only region in which the whole (or nearly the whole) history of Language can be studied. Besides this, in Europe and Asia we have a history. We can see how languages like the English and Russian are extending them selves how the German has extended itself; how the Latin had previously extended itself. We can see how languages like the Keltic, the Lithuanic, and the-fin recede. (1) The Western division is the one with which we are most familiar; it includes Great Britain, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, the Valley of the Danube, and Greece; allowance being made for the Turk and Hungarian, which are intrusive. (2) The great Northern area is in Russia conterminous with the Western, which means, roughly speaking, Northern Asia with a large part of Europe; the chief displacements having been effected by the great spread of the Turk language. (3) The south-eastern area begins with the North frontier of China, and includes Thibet, N ipal, the Transgangetic penin sula, Assam, Siam, Pegu, Cambogia, cochin-china, and China. (4) The south-western area contains India, Persia, and the Caucasus here the displacing languages are Indian, Persian, and Arabic, which last is treated as African.

Irish Druids and Old Irish Religions. E-book. Formato PDF James Bonwick   -  Forgotten Books, 2017  -

Ireland, whether viewed from an antiquarian or an ethnological point of View, is one of the most interesting countries in the world. It is not the less an object of attention from the fact, that in its early history there are traces of nearly every kind of pagan belief. It is curious that its literary treasures should have been so long neglected. Of late years, thanks to literary and scientific societies, including the new association fostered by Sir C. Gavan Duffy, Irish mss. Have engaged much thoughtful investigation.
