The Czech edition (1983) of Jirí Levý’s Umení prekladu served as a primary source text for the English version – The Art of Translation –, authored by Academic Slavist, writer and literary translation studies researcher Patrick John Corness, who translates into English from Czech, German, Polish, Russian and Ukrainian. The translation student chooses to translate part of the section on translation aesthetics, in greater detail, the chapters on translator’s literary creativity and fidelity in reproduction, respectively entirely and partially, from English into Italian, since she lacks a knowledge of Czech language, but demonstrates a profound interest for Czech structuralist aesthetics.

Leggendo una traduzione diretta o intermedia e l’opera originale, il lettore sensibile al linguaggio percepisce una differenza nello stile.Anche quando il testo tradotto non presenta evidenti errori o goffaggini linguistiche, spesso appare scialbo, incolore, grigio, privo di quel sottile tocco poetico che contraddistingue la prosa artistica da qualsiasi testo anche letterariamente corretto.La critica in questi casi parla di «traduttese» ma il confronto, di norma, aiuta a mostrare concretamente ciò che manca al testo.Le caratteristiche stilistiche negative della traduzione possono essere stabilite a) empiricamente, b) sperimentalmente.
