The Coins of Haidar Ali and Tipu Sultan. E-book. Formato PDF John Robertson Henderson - Forgotten Books, 2017 -
Many features of interest are presented by the coins of the two Muhammadan sovereigns who controlled the destinies of Mysore for the brief period Of thirty-eight years, — Haidar Ali, the illiterate warrior, able in troublous and therefore propitious times to establish a kingdom by his forceful personality and military genius, and Tipu Sultan, the son, who was unable to retain that kingdom. They are memorials Of two remarkable men with whom Britain was frequently at war, issued at a time when the question of European supremacy in India was still in process of determination. But in addition to their historical associations and the light which they throw on the policy and even on the personal characteristics of the two rulers, there are other features which render the coins specially attractive to collectors. Many of them are still met with in considerable numbers, not only in the bazaars of nearly every Mysore Village, but also over a considerable part of Southern India, while others again are of extreme rarity. The well-executed figure of an elephant, introduced by Haidar on some of the copper coins issued towards the close of his reign, and continued by Tim? On all those struck in the same metal, forms a distinctive feature; many Of the gold and silver pieces afford indisputable testimony to the decora tive value of the Arabic script, and it may be doubted if any coin more attractive in this respect than Tipu's double-rupee has ever been struck in India. For all these reasons it is not surprising that an extensive literature has sprung up on the subject, and no series of coins issued in South India and few in other parts of the country have been more Often described or referred to.
The Story of My Life. E-book. Formato PDF John Roberts Phillips - Forgotten Books, 2017 -
After earnest soliciation I have prevailed on my father to write out some of the events of his romantic and eventful career. One main ommission I see in his sketch is that he has nowhere mentioned the many deeds of loving kindness he has shown to the needy and numerous gifts to the church and to every deserving person or object that came to his notice, and they have been many. In his humility he follows the injunction "Let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth". In the pioneer days of Marion county he acted as physician, dentist, arbitrator of disputes, and business and spiritual adviser. His time, patience, and power have seemed to be unlimited. A keen sense of humor and ability to tell and enjoy a joke have made him friends and made his companionship delightful. His immense energy and dynamic force have manifested themselves, not only in a material way, but more than all in a religious devotion and application of the teachings of the Bible. He read to and with his children and encouraged us to memorize verses and chapters from the sacred volume. He taught us to sing. How well I remember the family group sitting by the fire. My father in the center leading and beating time to the music, every child imitating in tone and gesture. My mother, even then, was generally busy and would sing her songs while cooking, washing, ironing or mending. I have never heard sweeter music than her low tones on "Come, come, come, to the Savior," O love divine how sweet thou art," and other old songs of Zion. Our attendance at religious service was just as regular as the Lord's Day came with every extra opportunity the time and locality afforded. After all these years and as they grew old their lives prove that "The path of the just is as the shining light that shineth more and more into the perfect day."
