In an Introduction printed only in the first edition of this popular work, the gifted author took the reader into his confidence, and explained that, as nephew of Dr Bodinus, he passed his early days in the Berlin Zoological Gardens. Here he came into constant contact with Eskimo, Laplanders, Indians, Bedouins, and Blacks, and thus gained the sympathy and even the love of these primitive peoples. The knowledge in this way acquired of their feelings, temperament and views of the world soon satisfied him that the pictures of savage life painted for young and old in such current literature as Cooper's novels and the like are untrue to nature, and, in fact, for the most part "frauds." Convinced by his youthful experience that the "one touch of nature" was the key to the interpretation of all human activities, of all the outward manifestations of the mental qualities of the rudest no less than the most cultured races, he forthwith resolved to approach the study of mankind and his manifold faculties from this new standpoint, and devote all his spare hours to this, for him, all-absorbing subject.But, after much groping in the dark, and many more or less successful essays, he found that no real progress could be made without first bringing together the necessary documents, that is to say, the "raw materials," the endless products especially of infantile crafts and industries, from the four quarters of the globe.

I say that to suffer this to go on, would simply be a policy fraught with danger to ourselves. But by this I do not wish to cut into the question whether it is not our business to oppose the fatalism of the Crescent with the feeling of duty implied in the thought of the Cross, or whether this is not our own civilization's appointed task. And I am not even thinking of baptism, but only of education as we understand it.

The final chapter forms the conclusion in every sense, and, like every other scientific summary, opens up a vista upon greater problems unsolved as yet, and, therefore, ends upon a query. If the reader is clear in his mind about this arrangement of the subject matter, his selection of what will interest him most will present no difficulty. Some will find their pleasure in reading the account of the journeys made; others, in pursuing the descriptions of the method adopted in this investigation and its results. In my own humble opinion the introduction to the great problems involved in the previous history of Africa, which are set up in the recital of our experiences among the Savages of Africa, ought to interest all specialists in general, and in particular to be of unusual value to the colonial politician who would conduct the affairs of the countries through which we travelled either from his arm-chair at home in Europe or in the district itself. For the German Inner African Exploration Expedition, which, God grant, may still have a prolonged existence under whatever ?ag, and whose archives will continue to be uninterruptedly increased, has for its ideal task not only the establishment and exposition of the recorded and the prehistoric conditions of Africa, but'the creation of practical values and, above all, of a utilitarian standard.
