Li Po (701-762) è considerato il più grande di una straordinaria stagione di poeti che nell'ottavo secolo d.C. danno vita in Cina a un eccezionale fenomeno artistico, paragonabile a quello dei poeti latini dell’età augustea, degli elisabettiani, degli stilnovisti, dei rinascimentali, dei romantici. Formatosi sui classici del confucianesimo e poi illuminato dal Tao, aveva rinunciato a sostenere gli esami imperiali il cui superamento gli avrebbe garantito un titolo di studio ufficiale e importante. Secondo la leggenda, questo spirito libero e irrequieto, in un’estrema sintesi di inquietudine e di estasi, morì affogato nel fiume, ubriaco, mentre cercava di afferrare la luna.
